The Legacy of Ron Larson's Calculus - Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence

Five Decades of Cultivating Mathematical Thinking

In 1976, Ron Larson and co-author Bob Hostetler signed the publishing contract for their first math textbook, Calculus. That single signature sparked the creation of Larson Texts and eventually, the formation of Big Ideas Learning. We are immensely proud to celebrate Calculus’ 50th anniversary.

Ron has been a prolific writer and influential educator, having authored over 60 math textbooks from Calculus all the way down to kindergarten. To date, there are an estimated 90 million student users of Larson authored textbooks in the U.S., demonstrating Ron’s impact in mathematics instruction.

At a time when calculus textbooks were notoriously dense and difficult to navigate, Ron believed the subject could be far more approachable. He pioneered a fresh, innovative style of writing and design that made every page feel approachable and digestible. Larson Calculus was the first to prove that clear language and intentional design could transform how students learn complex math.

Jill Larson Im, Chief Brand Officer at Big Ideas Learning, notes that Ron prioritized accessibility long before it became a focal point in education. His vision for Calculus seamlessly combines strong visuals, mathematically accurate art, clean layouts, concise language, and real-world applications. “Ron’s intention was always to give students the ability and confidence to succeed in calculus with user-friendly instruction,” she shares.

That foundational commitment to quality paid off. Over the decades, Calculus and its subsequent editions have sold more than 7.5 million copies. Bruce Edwards, who joined as a co-author on the fourth edition, reflects on this legacy: “Millions of students appreciate Ron’s dedication and hard work in making Calculus the leading textbook in the world.”

The exact same principles that made Calculus stand out in 1976—clarity, approachability, and unwavering quality—still guide our work today, from K-12 to Higher Ed. We look forward to the next 50 years of empowering educators and inspiring students.
